Creating Tests
"Tests" is one of the three record types currently available on Nela. Some teams refer to tests as experiments. "Testing" is often a practice adopted by teams such as: digital marketing teams, UX/CX teams, product teams, strategy teams, startups and innovation teams. Tests are used to gain data and insights to help people to understand a problem or opportunity better. They are essential to providing evidence to back up any decision. In recent times, it seems that every industry is trying to adopt this approach so they can be more customer-centric!
For the sake of this guide, let's pretend we're a computer manufacturing company called "Orange" who recently launched their new product "oPod".
Create a Test
In order to create a test, you will have to click on the green circle button the top right. You'll notice that there are three options to create an insight, test and research note. You can access this button from almost ever page. Once you click, a popup will come up to prompt you name your test.
Fill Out Details Of Your Test
After naming your test, you will be redirected to the following screen:
Test Screen When Unassigned
Notice that there are a few components of a test:
Left hand side:
- Background: contextualise the test for other team members so they can see what you are working on.
- Objective: what are you hoping to achieve with this test?
- Hypothesis: what do you think will happen?
- Method: describe the method you are going to take to meet your objective.
- Metrics: what metrics are you testing, if any?
- Relevant Files: any supporting materials you want to upload, such as photos, documents and spreadsheets.
- Results (not pictured): the results of the test. Note that results only show up when a test has been started.
Right hand side:
- Upvotes: enables any team member to show their appreciation for your awesome test.
- Actions: other actions, such as sharing, deleting and integration actions.
- Test Progress: what stage the test is in. - INCLUDE LINK HERE
- Assigned to: who is actually doing the test?
- Tags: tag your test to make it easy to discover later.
- Related: any related insight/test/research.
Track Your Test
Once you have everything ready, you can start your test and record any observations or insights! You can start your test by clicking the "start test" button on the top right of the page.
By starting a test, a timer will start recording how long your test is going for. This is mostly for documentation purposes.
Once you start a test, you can start recording your results. Your results include your observations or any insights that you want to record.
Complete Your Test
Woo! You've finally completed your test! To complete your test, just simply click the "Complete Test" button at the top right. One you click it, a popup will appear, prompting you to add an insight that is related to the test you just completed. Notice that even if you cancel the popup, it won't be marked as "Complete". At Nela, we believe that every test must have an insight, even if it is, by definition, a failed test.
Continue to add your test and fill out any information that may be necessary. You'll notice that it is now automatically linked to the insight, under "Related".
